Twelve-year-old Zozo grows up in war-torn Beirut. In spite of the situation, Zozo leads a fairly normal life – he goes to school, has family and friends. But then tragedy strikes. Zozo loses his parents and he has to make his own way in life. His greatest hope is to get to Sweden, where his grandparents live. In this, his third feature film, Josef Fares, more often associated with screwball comedies, addresses aspects of his own life.

He does so with a mix of melancholy tragedy and quirky humour. Few films have ever portrayed the fate of children deracinated by the wars of adults with such candour and conviction.

Josef Fares

Josef Fares was born in 1977 in Lebanon, came to Sweden with his parents in 1987. At the age of 15 he started making short video films, winning several prizes at amateur and youth film festivals. Six years later he was the youngest student to be accepted into the directing class of the Swedish Film School. His first full-length feature, “Jalla! Jalla!” (2000), was a favourite with film-goers and critics alike in Sweden. The multi-cultural comedy swept up many festival prizes and was distributed in 25 countries. “Kops” (2003) set a new box office record by drawing a million viewers to Sweden’s cinemas. “Zozo” is Fares first non-comedy film.
